Deadpool 2 Deserves More Credit for its "Villain"

I really enjoyed Deadpool 2 , and I think it's way more ambitious than the first film. It's got all of the action, humor, and fan service of the first one, but it also packs a good amount of heart and handles world building in a pretty organic way. There are a bunch of fun things to write about when talking about the movie - like the future potential for these characters - but one thing that I haven't seen discussed is the movie's handling of its "villain." Unlike most comic book movies, Deadpool 2 doesn't have a traditional villain. Instead of being about good people trying to stop a bad person from doing something evil, it's about (mostly) good people trying to stop a good person from turning evil. The villain - the future version of "Firefist" - barely gets any screen time, and the only other blatantly bad people, like the Headmaster and Juggernaut, are clearly not the focus of the story. "Trying to stop a good person"

Comic Book Review: Old Man Logan #43

Review by Gregg Katzman Ed Brisson (writer) Juan Ferreyra (artist) VC's Cory Petit (letterer) Bullseye has always been one of the scariest Marvel villains, and that's made him one of my favorite bad guys. He may not look terrifying like Sabretooth and he may not be powerful like Carnage, but there's nothing more frightening than a highly skilled and intelligent person who loves to kill. Sabretooth can sometimes be reasoned with; Carnage can be outsmarted. But Bullseye? He won't change his mind, and he has a twisted gift for murder - he adores it. He's the best there is at what he does, and what he does is horrifying.  Old Man Logan #43 does a superb job portraying Bullseye as a spine-chilling and formidable foe. Before I talk about this issue's story, take a look at Mike Deodato Jr. and Carlos Lopez's cover below - the look in Bullseye's eyes and that sick smirk tells you everything you need to know about the crazed character. Can an

Comic Book Conversations #9: Andrea Sorrentino

For the ninth edition of Comic Book Conversations, I’m thrilled to welcome Andrea Sorrentino to the interview segment! Best known for his work on Green Arrow, Old Man Logan, Gideon Falls, and I,Vampire, the artist shares details about his creative process, explains why he reads reviews of his work, and gives aspiring artists some great advice. Plus, he offers some insight into one of Old Man Logan’s unforgettable double-page spreads. Now, let’s get to know Andrea a little better! GREGG KATZMAN: When did you realize you wanted to become an artist and what inspired you? ANDREA SORRENTINO: I’ve always liked to draw, since when I was a kid. I clearly remember this drawing I did when I was at the primary school, I think it was an animal in a jungle, and everyone liked it so much that it remained hooked in our room for a while. I think that was the very first push I had to keep drawing. But talking about comics, I’m not sure. I grew up reading Disney comics during

The Death of Superman: Enjoyed it? Buy it.

Written by Gregg Katzman The upcoming DC animated movie The Death of Superman has leaked way before its official release . I'm seeing a lot of positive tweets - some fans are even saying it's their new favorite DC animated movie - and that's not surprising since the movie's written by Peter J. Tomasi ( Superman Rebirth , Batman and Robin New 52 ) and co-directed by Sam Liu ( Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay , Teen Titans: The Judas Contract ) and Jake Castorena (storyboard artist for many great animated projects, like Justice League: Gods and Monsters , Batman: Assault on Arkham , and Beware the Batman ). On one hand, I'm really happy to see such enthusiastic comments about The Death of Superman . Taking on such an iconic story, especially within the confines of a relatively new animated universe's continuity (it started in Justice League: War ), is no easy feat. But on the other hand, I'm concerned that people won't add a digital or physical c

Celebrating Zack Snyder's Man of Steel on its 5th Anniversary

Written by Gregg Katzman I was able to see director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel early. The film opened on this day five years ago, but thanks to being a freelance writer for Comic Vine at the time, I had the opportunity to attend a screening on June 11 at the AMC in Lincoln Square. My memory is a little fuzzy on the details before and after the screening in New York, but I have a vivid memory of how I felt while watching the first DC Extended Universe movie. I remember having my jaw-dropped during the remarkable opening sequence on Krypton. I remember Hans Zimmer’s epic score elevating just about every single scene. I remember Amy Adams’ Lois Lane being an impressive investigative journalist by quickly discovering Superman’s identity (her blasting Kryptonians was a nice bonus). I remember Kevin Costner’s handling of the line “you are my son” making me hold back a tear, and I remember feeling heartbreak and understanding as he did his best to help his son but wasn’t complete
